Four results on phi^4 oscillons in D+1 dimensions

We present four results for oscillons in classical phi^4 theory in D+1 space-time dimensions, based on numerical simulations. These include the oscillon lifetime and the dependence on D; evidence for the uniqueness of the oscillon; evidence for the existence of oscillons beyond D=7; and a brief study of the spectrum of the radiation emitted from the oscillons before, during and after its ultimate demise.Comment: 12 pages, 16 figure

Constitutionalizing Chevron: Filling up on Interpretive Equality

    Get PDF
This Note proposes a new approach to constitutional interpretation, arguing that application of the Chevron doctrine to constitutional interpretation is a logical outgrowth of Supreme Court decisions and could harmonize some tensions in the Court\u27s current doctrines. This proposal would give Congress an explicit role in interpreting the Constitution, while the Court retains its role as supreme interpreter. Additionally, this Note suggests how this method can be used to critique current Court decisions while putting aside the agenda of individual commentators

Risk-based supervision of pension institutions in Denmark

This paper examines the move towards risk-based supervision of pension institutions in Denmark. Although Denmark has not adopted a comprehensive model to assess risk it has developed a number of building blocks which it uses for risk-based assessment. The motivations for improving risk assessment include a desire to identify emerging problems, and concerns about the solvency of pension institutions. In Denmark there is extensive use of guaranteed minimum returns in both the accumulation and payout phases which create substantial obligations on pension institutions, and focus attention on the integrity and solvency of the institutions which provide them. In conjunction with freeing up investment restrictions and moving towards market valuation of assets, the supervisor has introduced a'traffic light'stress test model which calculates the effect of several market scenarios - the red test which is the more plausible and the yellow test which is possible but less likely. In addition to the use of the traffic light system, there has been a growing emphasis on the adequacy of internal risk control systems and greater reliance on market discipline. Pension institutions have sought to reduce their exposure to market volatility by better matching of assets and liabilities. There is a much better understanding of the risks inherent in the pension institutions'portfolios, and there has been a substantial increase in the use of hedging instruments.Debt Markets,,Emerging Markets,Insurance&Risk Mitigation,Banks&Banking Reform

Landscape population genetics and the role of organic farming

    Get PDF
This project aims at understanding the effect of different farming systems on the genetic diversity of common agricultural species. It is well known that organic farming generally improves the biodiversity and abundance of species in the agricultural landscape (Hole et al., 2005). A reduction in species number and abundance has been shown as a result of the intensification of farming suggesting a relationship between farming intensity and species abundance (e.g. Stoate et al., 2001). Anyway, none of the studies that investigated the effects of pesticides presence and farming intensity has investigated the effect on the genetic diversity and isolation of the populations. It has been shown that, despite the theoretical expectations, also very abundant species like Abax parallelepipedus can be divided in isolated and genetically distinct populations within very few years in response to human activity (e.g. construction of streets: Keller et al., 2004). Therefore, we chose two common agricultural species (field vole, Microtus agrestis, and a non-pest ground beetle, Bembidion lampros) belonging to different taxa and with different dispersal abilities, to investigate the effect of pesticide use and intensiveness of farming on their genetic structuring and diversity
